Raise Poultry? Come Join Us.

You don’t need a big farm or a fancy website to have a place here. A lot of Nova Scotia’s poultry breeders are small homesteads and backyard operations, and Facebook is often the only online space they have to tell people what they raise. It’s great for sharing updates and photos. It’s not so great when a potential customer is trying to find your breeds, policies, location, contact information, and everything else you’ve posted at some point over the last three years.

Your Breeder Registry profile gives you a dedicated place to put all of that information together. Tell people about your homestead, show them what you raise, share your policies and services, link to your social pages or website if you have one, and give potential customers an easy way to get in touch.

It’s free, because the whole point is to make it easier for good breeders and local poultry keepers to find each other.

Find the Right Breeder for You

Finding someone who raises the breed you want is only part of the equation.

Breeder profiles give you more information about the people behind the birds, including what they raise, where they’re located, their breeding practices, policies and services, and how to learn more or get in touch.

You can also read reviews from people who have purchased from them and look for the Identity Confirmed badge, which means I’ve confirmed that the person behind the profile is who they say they are.

The Breeder Registry doesn’t inspect, certify, recommend, or endorse the breeders listed here. Instead, it gives you a better starting point to do your own research, ask questions, and decide which breeder is the right fit for you.

Not quite sure what you should be looking for? I’ve put together some practical guides to help with that too.

How Does the Registry Work?

Whether you’re looking for your next birds or you’re one of the people raising them, getting started is pretty simple.

Which one are you?

Looking for Poultry?

01

Start With the Directory

Search Nova Scotia breeders by species, breed, location, or breeding name to see who’s raising what you’re looking for.

Not completely sure what you want yet? That’s okay too. You can browse the directory and see what’s being raised around the province.

02

Get to Know the Breeder

Once someone catches your eye, have a look through their profile. You’ll find information the breeder has chosen to share about their homestead, birds, breeding practices, policies, services, and how to contact or learn more about them.

You may also see reviews from previous customers and an Identity Confirmed badge if I’ve confirmed the identity of the person behind the profile. Remember, a Registry listing or Identity Confirmed badge isn’t an endorsement or certification. They’re pieces of information to help you do your own research and decide who you’re comfortable buying from.

03

Ask Questions

Found someone who might be a good fit? Get in touch.

If the breeder has enabled the Registry contact form, you can send them a message directly from their profile without their email address being displayed publicly. They may also provide links to their website or social media pages.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions before buying. A little conversation beforehand can tell you a lot about whether a breeder and their birds are right for you. Not sure what you should ask?

Questions You Should Ask A Breeder Before Buying

04

Shop With a Plan

Before committing to birds or hatching eggs, make sure you understand what you’re buying and what happens next.

Straight run chicks means you’ll end up with roosters. Hatching eggs don’t come with guaranteed hatch rates. New birds need to be quarantined before joining your existing flock. The Poultry Buyer Guides cover these topics and more so you can make your purchase knowing what to expect.

05

Share Your Experience

Purchased from a breeder you found here? You can come back to their profile and leave a review about your experience.

Reviews help future poultry buyers make informed decisions and give breeders valuable feedback from the people who have actually purchased from them.

Want to Sell Your Birds?

Getting listed doesn’t require a website, a registered farm, or a huge breeding operation. If you’re intentionally breeding poultry in Nova Scotia, you can create a profile for free.

01

Create Your Account

Register for a Breeder Registry account using your email address. One account is all you need to manage your breeder profile.

02

Build Your Profile

This is your space to tell people about what you do.

Add your homestead or breeding name, location, species and breeds, information about your breeding program, what you offer, your policies, photos, and links to anywhere else people can find you online.

You don’t have to fill every available field. Share the information that’s useful and relevant to your breeding program.

03

Choose What Works For You

You’re in control of whether your profile is visible and whether visitors can contact you through the Registry.
Need some time away? Turn on vacation mode. Done breeding for the season? Update your information or temporarily hide your profile.

Your email address is never displayed publicly through the Registry contact form.

04

Keep Things Current

Your profile isn’t something you need to constantly feed with new content. There are no posts to write and no algorithm to keep happy. Just update your profile when something important changes so people finding you through the directory aren’t working from outdated information.

At the top, your profile will show the month and year that updates were last made.
